RAMBLIN' GAMBLIN'

The Animals were the more scruffy and beaten up group of Englishmen, as opposed to the Beatles. Eric Burdon's howling vocals are legendary.

REBEL CITY

Pretty PURDIE!!!!!!!!!!

FREQUENT FLIER

Apparently Jeff Mangum did a surprise appearance in New York yesterday. He performed a few Neutral Milk Hotel songs, too. Does this mean more performances? Who knows, but that's pretty awesome.

THE GREAT COMPROMISER

I was informed yesterday that one of the greatest comedic actors, Leslie Nealson, has passed away.

He stared in such films as Airplane!, Spy Hard, Creepshow, and of course the Naked Gun series.

RAMSHACKLE

By the time Beck first made it big in 1994, he already had roughly three albums worth of material. Majority of it was more acoustic-based, yet I think those are his best works.

DOWN DER FLY

Sleep fucking rocks, definitely in the heart of old school Black Sabbath.

SIMPLY SQUARED

The Yardbirds with Jimmy Page on guitar, this was before Led Zeppelin even started. Good stuff.

GOIN' NOWHERE

One of my favorite Breeders songs, Kim Deal totally rocks it out.

If you didn't know, she's in the Pixies as well.

DELIVERING THE FLOW

Hope everyone had a very eventful and exciting October, now back to handing out the beats.

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL

Although not as mind blowing as the original series, The Twilight Zone movie has its moments of well developed horror.

The opening scene is personally one of my favorites, a nice touch of CCR as well.

FLOATING DOWNSTREAM

Rosemary's Baby is a very intense thriller, makes you think, and has some rather trippy moments.

I suggest you watch the entire video.

KILLER KLOWNS

Killer Klowns from Outer Space, what more can I say.

BLOOD BATH

Peter Jackson's first prize winner film right here. Dead Alive is a crazy tale of zombies, blood, zombie babies, and European love.

This scene is known for it's record breaking use of fake blood.

DEVIOUS DEMONS ON DISPLAY

The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror specials were always the best.

RED EYES, WHITE TALE

Absolute classic trailer of horror, movie was so raw that it was eventually banned from theatres.

BLEEDING FROM EVERY LIMB

One of my favorite Tim Burton short films.

GREEEEEEEETINGS, THIS IS VINCENT PRICE

For the next four days, I will be posting none other than horror films, terror stories, and a few gory tales.

Figure I should start it off with an absolute classic.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

ALLEY CAT

The Coral is a band hailing from the UK. They came around in 2003, yet failed to get as popular as the other garage bands during this era, such as The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives, and The Vines.

Even still, they have some pretty catchy tunes.

OLD DREAMS, NEW REALITY

Iconic song off of Sonic Youth's 1992 album, "Dirty." Possibly my favorite album from them.

UP AND AWAY

Some more Philadelphia pride right here.

Caboder is an awesome Philly band that kinda reminds me of Sonic Youth. They're all a bunch of cool dudez.

Old Scratch is playing a show with them next month, all the deetz COMING SOON.

ROCK ME AMADEUS

BACK WITH MOONROCKS

The Unicorns are a synth pop/punk band from Montreal, Canada. They helped start a huge music scene in Canada, including Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene.

Their debut (and only) LP, "Who Will Cut Our Hair When We Are Gone?" is absolutely brilliant, I recommend to go and listen right away.

Sadly, things in the band did not work out so well, and they split up later in 2004. The two masterminds of the band, Nick Diamonds and Aldan Penner started up their own projects, which I will eventually post sometime.

STAGE ON FIRE

One of my favorite Jimi Hendrix tunes, his rendition of The Troggs', "Wild Thing."

There hasn't been a guitarist/artist like him since:

HAPPY GO-LUCKY

The Pixies ripping through a cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain song, "Head On".

They just played the Tower Theatre this week, probably was a great show.

UNDERGROUND UPTOWN

The legendary Guru with special guest MC Solaar. Give some RESPECT.

BLACK SHEEP

This is a very important post.

As of right now, I would consider this band my favorite current punk band from Philadelphia.

Rasputin's Secret Police are raw as hell, and they went to my grade school.

Here are TWO videos from them, and you should check both.

BABIES IN RENO WITH THE VITAMIN D

Keep on rockin!!!! Black Keys are just starting to get some well deserved attention. Great band to see live, one of the best dirty guitar tones out there now.

RIGHT OUT OF THE BAG

Here's a band I've seen a few times around the circuit: Drink Up Buttercup

It's always cool to see a Philly band get some attention. Their sound is somewhat pop-experimental-rock. Almost like something you'd hear from Elephant 6.

Without further ado:

PISTOL PETE

Gary Busey as Buddy Holly. Need I say more?

A NEW HOPE

One of my all time favorite Nirvana performances, cover of the Velvet Underground song, "Here She Comes Now." Kurt's guitar cuts out midway through--nice!!

Enjoy!!!

INITIATE THE UNIFORM

The Midnight Special was a TV program from the early 70's to early 80's that showcased many up and coming bands from the era. You knew you "made it" if you were on this show.

Here's Cheap Trick performing "Surrender" on the show, one of the most important rock anthems from the 70's, turn up your headphones and rock out:

MY AUTUMN JACKET

The Thermals are a three-piece from Portland, Oregon. Good raw pop-rock. Definitely deserve more attention than they already have. Recording a new album I believe.

Sunday, August 22, 2010

PIONEER CHANDELIER

The Apples in Stereo are a band hailing from Denver. They've been around since way back in '95 and have put out a total of seven amazingly pop-guitar-driven albums. Still touring too.

The lead dude, Robert Scheider, founded the "Elephant Six Recording Company" of which Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, Olivia Tremor Control, and plenty of other bands are a part of.

Here's a track off their first album:

STRUM THE GUITAR!!

Kurt say hello!!!!

APPLE BLOSSOM

Back in the mid to late 80's, there was a huge underground music scene in Olympia, Washington.

Many could argue that this band, Beat Happening, were the pioneers of this scene. Led by Calvin Johnson, who pretty much started K Records. Real punk rock. This is off their last album, but I recommend you listening to them all.

SMASH HIT

Hilarious interview with Beck and Thurston Moore way back in 1994. When MTV was actually cool, and 120 minutes was still on air. Enjoy!!

Thursday, August 12, 2010

GREEN LIGHTS, YELLOW HAT

I present to you, one of the greater punk rock bands of the past few years: The Ponys.

These guys really know how to rock, I totally recommend listening to all three of their albums.

LAST IN LINE, FIRST IN THOUGHT

Here's a track from a new-ish band "Harlem."

Their new album, "Hippies", is packed with short, simple, catchy tunes. Which is awesome.

Here's one of my favorites from the album:

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

LASIK EYE SLAUGHTERY

If you are a fan of the genius Daniel Johnston, or haven't even heard of him, I highly suggest you watch this movie, The Devil and Daniel Johnston. Very interesting, you will laugh, cry, sulk, jump, laugh, dance, yawn....

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

PAINT ON THE PAVEMENT

Remember in 2003 when all the "garage" bands were coming out of the waterworks?

For example, The Vines, White Stripes, The Strokes, The Hives. They were apparently supposed to "save" rock music.

Yeah.....that happened.

Anyways, here's a band from Australia, where the Vines hail from.

ROTTEN APPLE.

Wavves is playing a show in New York tonight, first time back to the US for quite a while. Should be a good show, I'd go if I were you.

If you like Wavves, I'm sure you will enjoy this band, Best Coast. Pretty much the same concept.

Catchy stuff!!

JUMPING FOR JAMES JOYCE VOL 1.

I would have loved to seen Neutral Milk Hotel, very good performers.

DEAR BELOVED, UNTIL TOMORROW

So after tonight I walked to my car, and what's hanging out on the INSIDE of my windshield? A praying mantis! Good luck, I suppose.

The Beatles' album "Please Please Me" is the most looked over album, ever. I think at least. One of my favorite tracks by the Beatles is a song sung by George Harrison called, "Do You Want To Know a Secret?" Very underrated track, the harmonies sung by Paul and John are so fitting. Actually being written by John, he let George sing it in order to "join in on the fun."

LISTEN:

FOLLOW THE YELLOWBRICK ROAD

The Greenhornes are a band from Ohio, very cool old school sound. The drummer and bassist went onto play with Jack White in the Raconteurs, unfortunately.

Check 'em out!

LAST TRAIN TO CLARKSVILLE

Had a pretty eventful weekend, good stuff.

This band, The Clean, pretty much set off the "Do It Yourself" motive way back in '81. Hailing from New Zealand, this brought the attention of many cool bands, such as The Chills, The Bats, and the rest of Flying Nun records.

Very cool sound, I suggest you look them up:

FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL

Seeing my friend John play the trumpet with the Dangerous Ponies tonight, should be a good show. 7:30 at the Blockery, everyone come on by!

Where do you think Jack White got his idea for a blues duo band? Ripped off the great Flat Duo Jets. These cool cats were around during the late 80s and some of the 90s, and they totally deserved more attention. Raw as shit rock and roll.

OH, and is that a Silvertone guitar? Of course, this guy knows his blues!!!

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

CHOCOLATE JIMMIES@@@$!!

Remember the Violent Femmes? Very underrated band. Their self-titled debut is one of the finest albums on Slash Records, a punk rock label from Los Angeles, who also had The Misfits, L7, and The Germs under their belt (talk about punk).

Although their record label was under a very radical punk aestetic, the Violent Femmes stuck to their more acoustic roots, very cool. Definitely a show I'd go see back in the 80's. Check them out:

LOST IN TIME AND SPACE.

It occurred to me today that Andy Hummel, the bassist from the mega-pop group, "Big Star", died recently. Very sad news. Not a lot of people are familiar with this great band, I totally recommend them.

Here you are:

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE IS DEAD.

Finally some good punk rock is coming back into the scene, and if you don't know who these cats are by now, you're missing out. Critical display of rock and roll.

Enjoy WWAAAAAAAVVVVEESSSSS:

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS.

Heard this on 88.5XPN, never heard it before. This Ben Lee character doesn't really seem to be very interesting, but this song is unbelievably catchy, take a listen:

MUGWUMP FROMP

Are you familiar with the NME Music Expo from 1965? Well, you should be. This was a fantastic all day event with artists such as The Kinks, The Animals, The Kinks, Moody Blues, Rolling Stones, and uh, The Beatles? Yeah, I'm already starting to build a time machine in my garage.

But take a listen to a little band called Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, their drummer completely rips it in the beginning of their first song! Very cool raw sound, if we could only go back:

BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU

Just got back from traveling abroad, meaning, going down to New Jersey for a bit. A friend of mine put in a Man Man album on the way down, I saw them back in March and their show was one of the most energetic shows I've seen, lots of fun. Did I mention they are from Philly? Take a listen:

REDRUM.

So, I heard this song on the radio today, and I forgot how much Shocking Blue rocked the 70's, very underrated band, their chord progression and melodies are perfect, and without saying they are cooler than you or me, take a listen:

LOMTICKS OF TOAST

My cat just caught and ate an annoying housefly, yes!
I heard the Vaselines are coming to town, definitely want to go to that.
