So after tonight I walked to my car, and what's hanging out on the INSIDE of my windshield? A praying mantis! Good luck, I suppose.
The Beatles' album "Please Please Me" is the most looked over album, ever. I think at least. One of my favorite tracks by the Beatles is a song sung by George Harrison called, "Do You Want To Know a Secret?" Very underrated track, the harmonies sung by Paul and John are so fitting. Actually being written by John, he let George sing it in order to "join in on the fun."
The Greenhornes are a band from Ohio, very cool old school sound. The drummer and bassist went onto play with Jack White in the Raconteurs, unfortunately.
This band, The Clean, pretty much set off the "Do It Yourself" motive way back in '81. Hailing from New Zealand, this brought the attention of many cool bands, such as The Chills, The Bats, and the rest of Flying Nun records.
Seeing my friend John play the trumpet with the Dangerous Ponies tonight, should be a good show. 7:30 at the Blockery, everyone come on by!
Where do you think Jack White got his idea for a blues duo band? Ripped off the great Flat Duo Jets. These cool cats were around during the late 80s and some of the 90s, and they totally deserved more attention. Raw as shit rock and roll.
OH, and is that a Silvertone guitar? Of course, this guy knows his blues!!!
Remember the Violent Femmes? Very underrated band. Their self-titled debut is one of the finest albums on Slash Records, a punk rock label from Los Angeles, who also had The Misfits, L7, and The Germs under their belt (talk about punk).
Although their record label was under a very radical punk aestetic, the Violent Femmes stuck to their more acoustic roots, very cool. Definitely a show I'd go see back in the 80's. Check them out:
It occurred to me today that Andy Hummel, the bassist from the mega-pop group, "Big Star", died recently. Very sad news. Not a lot of people are familiar with this great band, I totally recommend them.
Finally some good punk rock is coming back into the scene, and if you don't know who these cats are by now, you're missing out. Critical display of rock and roll.
Heard this on 88.5XPN, never heard it before. This Ben Lee character doesn't really seem to be very interesting, but this song is unbelievably catchy, take a listen:
Are you familiar with the NME Music Expo from 1965? Well, you should be. This was a fantastic all day event with artists such as The Kinks, The Animals, The Kinks, Moody Blues, Rolling Stones, and uh, The Beatles? Yeah, I'm already starting to build a time machine in my garage.
But take a listen to a little band called Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, their drummer completely rips it in the beginning of their first song! Very cool raw sound, if we could only go back:
Just got back from traveling abroad, meaning, going down to New Jersey for a bit. A friend of mine put in a Man Man album on the way down, I saw them back in March and their show was one of the most energetic shows I've seen, lots of fun. Did I mention they are from Philly? Take a listen:
So, I heard this song on the radio today, and I forgot how much Shocking Blue rocked the 70's, very underrated band, their chord progression and melodies are perfect, and without saying they are cooler than you or me, take a listen:
