INITIATE THE UNIFORM

The Midnight Special was a TV program from the early 70's to early 80's that showcased many up and coming bands from the era. You knew you "made it" if you were on this show.

Here's Cheap Trick performing "Surrender" on the show, one of the most important rock anthems from the 70's, turn up your headphones and rock out:

MY AUTUMN JACKET

The Thermals are a three-piece from Portland, Oregon. Good raw pop-rock. Definitely deserve more attention than they already have. Recording a new album I believe.

PIONEER CHANDELIER

The Apples in Stereo are a band hailing from Denver. They've been around since way back in '95 and have put out a total of seven amazingly pop-guitar-driven albums. Still touring too.

The lead dude, Robert Scheider, founded the "Elephant Six Recording Company" of which Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, Olivia Tremor Control, and plenty of other bands are a part of.

Here's a track off their first album:

APPLE BLOSSOM

Back in the mid to late 80's, there was a huge underground music scene in Olympia, Washington.

Many could argue that this band, Beat Happening, were the pioneers of this scene. Led by Calvin Johnson, who pretty much started K Records. Real punk rock. This is off their last album, but I recommend you listening to them all.

SMASH HIT

Hilarious interview with Beck and Thurston Moore way back in 1994. When MTV was actually cool, and 120 minutes was still on air. Enjoy!!

GREEN LIGHTS, YELLOW HAT

I present to you, one of the greater punk rock bands of the past few years: The Ponys.

These guys really know how to rock, I totally recommend listening to all three of their albums.

LAST IN LINE, FIRST IN THOUGHT

Here's a track from a new-ish band "Harlem."

Their new album, "Hippies", is packed with short, simple, catchy tunes. Which is awesome.

Here's one of my favorites from the album:

LASIK EYE SLAUGHTERY

If you are a fan of the genius Daniel Johnston, or haven't even heard of him, I highly suggest you watch this movie, The Devil and Daniel Johnston. Very interesting, you will laugh, cry, sulk, jump, laugh, dance, yawn....

PAINT ON THE PAVEMENT

Remember in 2003 when all the "garage" bands were coming out of the waterworks?

For example, The Vines, White Stripes, The Strokes, The Hives. They were apparently supposed to "save" rock music.

Yeah.....that happened.

Anyways, here's a band from Australia, where the Vines hail from.

ROTTEN APPLE.

Wavves is playing a show in New York tonight, first time back to the US for quite a while. Should be a good show, I'd go if I were you.

If you like Wavves, I'm sure you will enjoy this band, Best Coast. Pretty much the same concept.

Catchy stuff!!

JUMPING FOR JAMES JOYCE VOL 1.

I would have loved to seen Neutral Milk Hotel, very good performers.
